Machine Learning: The History

steve jobs death quote

Machine learning dates back as far as the seventeenth century. Today, machines can learn tasks that are not specifically programmed for them. We can now train machines to operate in unknow environments. What's the history machine learning? Read on to find out. It is an important topic that engineers and computer scientists can both learn from. This article will help you learn more about the history of machine-learning.

Neural networks

Walter Pitts McCulloch (a neurophysiologist) and Warren Sturgis McCulloch (a mathematician) were the first to create artificial neural networks. Their work was instrumental in establishing the foundation for neural networks. The two scientists proved that an input can be activated only if it is active by using logic gates. In essence, they were able to simplify the functioning of the brain, and thus, paved the way for machine learning.

Convolutional neural networks

Convolutional neural network are composed of several layers of artificial neuron. Each neuron in the network is a mathematical function that calculates a weighted sum of its inputs and outputs a value called an activation. When given pixel values, the artificial neurons are taught to recognize different visual features. CNN has a first layer of convolutional layers. This layer contains the input image and generates activation maps. These maps highlight different parts of the image.

Boosting

Although the concept is not new to machine learning, it was first used for boosting in the 1990s. It is an algorithm to improve supervised learning by turning weak learners into more competent ones. Robert Schapire presented the concept boosting in 1990 in a paper. He explained how to turn weak classifiers in strong classes. Weak learners are characterized by being only slightly correlated with the true classification, while strong learners are well aligned with the real classification.

Turing test

The Turing Test has become one of the most important concepts in the philosophy of artificial intelligence. Interrogating a computer with a question must produce an enquiry the machine cannot comprehend. If the machine is able to do this, it is said to have passed the Turing Test. This test attracts projects that are primarily designed to fool judges.

Deep learning

Machine learning and deeplearning are both a history that dates back to 1965 when Valentin Grigoryevich Lapa and Alex Grigoryevich Ivakhnenko invented an algorithm that used multinomial activation functions. The idea was to replicate the brain's neural networks by analysing data. In the 1960s, however, there was no funding for research into artificial intelligence, and individuals continued to work on the topic.

FAQ

Do I need to be connected to the internet to play?

No! Many people assume they have to connect the internet in order to play games. However, this is not true. You don't need to connect to the internet to play a particular game.

This mode is known as "Always on" mode. When you turn it off, the game automatically downloads updates and patches whenever they become available. You don't need to worry about installing patches or updating.

Is there a way to make 4K Ultra HD content on the Xbox One?

Yes! The Xbox One supports Ultra HD content in 4K. It can play the latest TV shows and movies. HDMI cables are required to watch these movies on your TV. Or, you can stream them directly on your Xbox One through Netflix, YouTube or Amazon Video.

Is the Xbox One forward compatible?

However, not all games will be supported. Some games won’t run on the updated platform due to technological changes or format. Others have not been updated yet. The good news is that most Xbox 360 titles will run fine on the Xbox One.

Statistics

  • Estimates range from 505 million peak daily players[10]to over 1 billion total players.[11][12] The free-to-play mobile version accounts for 97% of players. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • The pay-to-play PC version accounts for 3% of players. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • If you were planning on getting Game Pass Ultimate anyway, All Access basically represents 0% financing plus a small Game Pass discount. (nytimes.com)
  • Rural areas that are still 100% cable may continue to experience peak hour slowdowns, however. (highspeedinternet.com)
